Arsenal step up pursuit of Rodrygo with £67m bid for Real Madrid star

Arsenal have submitted a formal bid to sign Brazilian winger Rodrygo from Real Madrid this summer, according to reports from Spain.

The 24-year-old has been at the centre of transfer speculation after being left on the bench by new Madrid boss Xabi Alonso in their La Liga opener against Osasuna. While Alonso insisted it was a tactical choice, Rodrygo’s omission has fuelled talk of a potential exit.

Arsenal’s Renewed Interest

The Gunners had appeared to cool their pursuit of Rodrygo following the arrivals of Noni Madueke from Chelsea and Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace. However, Fichajes, via Defensa Central, claims Mikel Arteta’s side have reignited their interest with an opening offer worth around £67m.

That figure falls short of Madrid’s £78m valuation, but with Manchester City reportedly stepping back from the race, Arsenal are now considered frontrunners to secure his signature if negotiations progress.

Injuries Forcing Arsenal’s Hand

Arsenal’s push for Rodrygo comes at a time when their attacking options have been hit by injuries. Kai Havertz has suffered a knee problem, while Bukayo Saka was forced off against Leeds with another hamstring issue. Captain Martin Odegaard also picked up a shoulder concern in the same game.

Speaking after the match, Arteta admitted:
“Bukayo had to come off when sprinting with a defender. He felt a hamstring, a different one than last season. We had already lost Kai, and now Bukayo and Martin – that’s why the squad has to be big.”

Although Arteta still has Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Madueke available, none possess the Champions League pedigree and versatility that Rodrygo offers.

What Next for Arsenal?

Madrid remain firm on their valuation, meaning Arsenal may need to raise their bid if they are serious about landing the Brazilian. If a deal is struck, one of Arsenal’s current wide players could be sacrificed, with Martinelli the most likely candidate amid reported interest from Saudi Arabia.

Rodrygo’s arrival would not only strengthen Arsenal’s attack but also give Arteta greater tactical flexibility as the club looks to mount a serious title challenge.
