Everton retain interest in Rayan Cherki
Everton could reignite their pursuit of Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki this summer, but securing the 21-year-old won’t be straightforward. Despite their previous interest in January, two significant obstacles could derail the Toffees’ plans.
A Transfer That Almost Happened
Back in January, Cherki was widely expected to leave Lyon as the club faced serious financial struggles. At one point, they were even at risk of relegation to Ligue 2 due to financial mismanagement. However, a late intervention, partly linked to their owners’ involvement with Brazilian side Botafogo, helped stabilise the situation. As a result, Lyon held onto their top talents, including Cherki and Ernest Nuamah, despite heavy interest from clubs like Everton.

Now, with the summer window open, Everton are ready to try again. The club sees Cherki as a key addition to elevate their attacking quality, especially as they prepare to move into their new stadium. However, the situation is more complicated than it seems.
Two Key Challenges in Everton’s Pursuit
While Everton are keen, Cherki’s future might lie elsewhere due to two major factors.
Bigger Clubs Are Circling – Cherki is attracting interest from Champions League-level clubs, which puts Everton at a disadvantage. The French starlet has his sights set on Europe’s biggest stage, and with Everton not in contention for elite European football, they may struggle to convince him.
David Moyes’ Transfer Philosophy – With Moyes back at the helm after replacing Sean Dyche, Everton’s transfer strategy is shifting. The Scottish boss prefers building a core of young English talent, which might not align with a move for Cherki. While the Frenchman’s technical brilliance is undeniable, he may not fit into Moyes’ long-term vision for the club.
Will Everton Make Their Move?
Despite the challenges, Everton still admire Cherki’s talent and could test Lyon’s resolve with a summer bid. However, whether the 21-year-old sees Goodison Park as his ideal next step remains uncertain. With bigger clubs lurking and Moyes’ cautious approach to overseas signings, Everton face an uphill battle in their chase for the Lyon star.
Would Cherki be the perfect signing for Everton, or should they focus on other targets? Let us know your thoughts!
