Liverpool Consider £43m Micky Van de Ven Move to Replace Virgil van Dijk

Reds Reportedly Line Up Tottenham Captain

Liverpool are said to be weighing up a move for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Micky Van de Ven, according to Football Insider. The Merseysiders are reportedly looking at the Dutchman as a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, whose contract expires at the end of this season.

Van Dijk turns 36 soon, so it is understandable that Anfield chiefs are planning ahead. Van de Ven, 25, joined Spurs from Wolfsburg in 2023 and has since become one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders.

Van de Ven Open to Anfield Switch

Despite signing a new deal running until 2031, the report claims the defender would be receptive to joining Liverpool. Spurs’ struggles are a major factor. After back-to-back 17th-place finishes, they sit bottom of the table with just two points from five games, and Liverpool knocked them out of the Carabao Cup in the third round.

Last season, Van de Ven scored seven goals and provided one assist in 45 appearances. He also played a part in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph over Manchester United and is now a fixture in the Netherlands squad.

Why Van de Ven Suits Liverpool

Standing 6ft 4in, the left-footed defender combines pace, aerial strength and composure in possession. He can also operate at left-back for his country, offering tactical flexibility. Transfermarkt values him at around £43m, though Tottenham are notoriously tough negotiators and would likely demand far more to sell their captain to a Premier League rival.

Our Take

Fitness was once a concern for Van de Ven, but he has been playing regularly in recent months. At 25, he is entering his prime, and a signing of this calibre would give Liverpool defensive stability for years.

Persuading Tottenham to sell will be the real obstacle, given his fresh contract and their reluctance to strengthen a top-four rival. Even so, Spurs’ current plight could shift the balance. Whether Liverpool move in January or wait until next summer remains to be seen, but this is a story worth following closely.
