Liverpool eye Leipzig star Castello Lukeba?
Liverpool are reportedly showing strong interest in signing RB Leipzig’s highly-rated defender Castello Lukeba, according to transfer expert Graeme Bailey.
Reds Set for Defensive Overhaul
After a quiet couple of transfer windows, Liverpool splashed the cash this summer to rejuvenate their squad under Arne Slot. The Reds brought in the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giorgi Mamardashvili, signaling their intent to compete on all fronts.

However, despite the attacking reinforcements, defensive issues have continued to plague the Merseyside club. The long-term injury to Giovanni Leoni has left Liverpool short at centre-back, with only Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez available.
Slot’s side even made a late attempt to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace on deadline day, but the move fell through. Now, with Konaté’s form dipping and his contract set to expire next year, Liverpool are desperate to add more stability at the back.
Lukeba on Liverpool’s Radar
Bailey reports via TBR Football that Liverpool are preparing to strengthen their defence next year, prioritising Guehi on a free transfer. But should that deal fail, Lukeba has emerged as one of the key names on their five-man shortlist, which also includes Nico Schlotterbeck, Dayot Upamecano, Joel Ordóñez, and Taras Mykhavko.
The 22-year-old French defender has impressed in the Bundesliga with his composure on the ball and intelligent reading of the game. A left-footed centre-back, Lukeba is seen as an ideal long-term replacement for Van Dijk, who turns 35 next year.
Price Could Be a Stumbling Block
Lukeba’s current contract includes a £70 million release clause, but reports suggest Leipzig may accept a lower offer. Still, Liverpool are cautious about paying such a hefty fee for the young defender.
Having already struck gold with Leipzig signings like Konaté and Szoboszlai, the Reds could return to the German club once again — but only if the price is right.
It now remains to be seen whether Liverpool will make their move for Lukeba as part of their defensive rebuild heading into 2025.
