Liverpool Missed Out on Marco Palestra to Chelsea in £43m Transfer Race

Liverpool held talks over a summer move for Marco Palestra before losing out to Chelsea, according to The Athletic.

Liverpool’s Right-Back Headache

Since Trent Alexander-Arnold’s switch to Real Madrid, the right-back berth has been a persistent problem at Anfield. Jeremie Frimpong arrived as his direct replacement but has struggled to settle into English football, while Conor Bradley’s progress has been hampered by a lengthy injury lay-off.

With options limited, then-manager Arne Slot was often forced to shift midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones into makeshift right-back roles last season. Slot was sacked at the end of that campaign, with Andoni Iraola arriving from Bournemouth to take the reins ahead of the new season. Jones has since completed a permanent switch to Inter Milan, thinning the squad further, while the arrival of Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona offers some cover, though the Uruguayan is a natural centre-back rather than a specialist full-back.

Palestra Snapped Up by Chelsea

The Athletic claims Liverpool did explore a deal for Palestra but Iraola’s side ultimately chose to direct their transfer budget towards strengthening the wide areas following Mohamed Salah’s exit. Having failed to raise significant funds through player sales, the Merseyside club were left unable to compete, and Chelsea moved in under new boss Xabi Alonso to seal his signature from Atalanta for an initial £43 million, with the Italian earmarked to fit Alonso’s attacking wing-back system.

A Player Liverpool Could Do With

At just 21, Palestra is a right-footed, versatile defender equally comfortable at right-back or right wing-back, and capable of covering the opposite flank if required. He is quick, technically assured, strong in the air, comfortable building from the back, and delivers a dangerous final ball. On loan at Cagliari last term, he contributed to five goals and kept six clean sheets across 37 Serie A appearances.

In my view, this represents a missed opportunity for Liverpool. Palestra looks the type of forward-thinking full-back who could have solved their long-term problem in that position, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he becomes one of the Premier League’s standout young defenders at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool, fresh from beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League, now turn attention to a Premier League trip to struggling Fulham this weekend.
