Reds Still Searching for Defensive Depth

After allowing Jarell Quansah to leave in the summer, Liverpool strengthened their backline by signing Giovanni Leoni from Parma. However, with the young Italian still developing and Joe Gomez battling ongoing fitness issues, Arne Slot has been left short of reliable options beyond Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.

Slot reportedly pushed for Guehi’s arrival during the summer window. The England international even underwent a medical at Anfield, but Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner blocked the transfer, unable to secure a replacement in time.

Injury Setbacks Add to Liverpool’s Concerns

Liverpool’s defensive frailties have been exposed early this season. Konaté has struggled for consistency, while Leoni suffered a major knee injury on his debut — ruling him out for the rest of the campaign. As a result, the Reds are expected to return for a new centre-back in 2025, with Guehi once again emerging as their top target.

Guehi Deal Could Favour Liverpool

The Daily Mail reports that Liverpool are “still keen” on signing Guehi, whose contract at Selhurst Park expires at the end of the season. While a January move appears unlikely, the prospect of signing him on a free transfer next summer would be a huge boost for the Merseyside club.

Since joining Palace from Chelsea, the 25-year-old has developed into one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders. Valued at around £39 million by Transfermarkt, Guehi has become a key figure for both club and country — and his potential arrival could prove a masterstroke for Liverpool’s long-term defensive rebuild.
