Manchester United Ready to Revive Lewis Hall Chase Despite Newcastle Contract Extension

Manchester United have not given up hope of signing Lewis Hall, even after the left-back put pen to paper on a new deal at Newcastle United, according to TEAMtalk.

Erik ten Hag’s successors at Old Trafford entered the summer transfer window determined to bolster two areas of the squad: central midfield and left-back. With Luke Shaw increasingly injury-prone and a lack of genuine cover in that role, Hall emerged as United’s leading target throughout the window.

Reports at the time suggested United were prepared to table a formal bid, yet Newcastle held firm and swiftly knocked back any enquiries, unwilling to lose a player they regard as central to their long-term plans on Tyneside.

That stance has now been underlined by Newcastle handing Hall a fresh contract, though the exact length of the extension remains undisclosed. The 20-year-old arrived at St James’ Park in a £28 million move from Chelsea in 2024, having previously impressed during a loan spell there, and has gone on to feature 107 times for the Magpies across all competitions.

Rewarding him with fresh terms, particularly after losing several key figures over the summer, sends a clear message about how highly Eddie Howe’s side value his development and long-term potential at the club.

Would United Really Pursue Hall Again?

Despite the setback, TEAMtalk suggests United could return for Hall in a future window, with the England Under-21 international reportedly open to a move should circumstances change further down the line.

Personally, I’d be surprised if Newcastle budge even slightly. Clubs rarely renew a player’s terms only to sell him twelve months later, and Howe’s side have shown throughout their PIF-backed project that they don’t cave under pressure from bigger rivals.

United would likely need to smash the £28 million fee they once paid Chelsea, and possibly go well beyond it, to prise him away. Given their own defensive investment elsewhere this summer, I suspect this pursuit cools rather than heats up before the January window arrives.
