Redknapp Blasts Man Utd’s Zirkzee After Woeful Display vs Brighton in Carabao Cup

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has hit out at Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee following a shambolic second-half cameo in the Red Devils’ Carabao Cup third-round exit to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Zirkzee Struggles as United Crash Out

Having shone in patches during his time at Bologna, the Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford carrying real promise, yet he has never quite settled into English football’s rhythm.

Under Michael Carrick, Zirkzee slipped down the pecking order last season and was reportedly close to an exit on deadline day, though United ultimately kept hold of him. This campaign he has been used sparingly, impressing off the bench against Sabah in the Champions League last week before a disappointing outing versus Brighton.

Leading 2-0 early on, United contrived to lose 3-2 to a heavily rotated Seagulls side. Carrick turned to Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo after the break in search of a response, but the introductions backfired badly – Zirkzee chief among the culprits.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp didn’t hold back:

“They [Brighton] looked better coached, they had patterns of play even though they made changes today, they looked like a thoroughly good side. United threw on their insurance policy in Bruno and Mainoo. Everyone thought they might be able to make an impact and in fact it made them worse. Zirkzee came on and couldn’t pass the ball to his own teammate. Incredible for Brighton, they deserved it.”

A Troubling Pattern for United

This defeat extends a wretched run for the club, who have now lost three of their opening six fixtures across all competitions despite summer investment in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. Sitting 13th in the Premier League with just four points from four games, question marks over squad depth – and individuals like Zirkzee – are only growing louder.

United now turn their attention to Fulham away before the international break, with little margin left for further slip-ups.
