Tottenham Lead Race for Brazilian Defender Arthur Dias in €30m Transfer Battle

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ahead of their rivals in the chase for Athletico Paranaense centre-back Arthur Dias, with Newcastle United and several European sides also monitoring the teenager.

Spurs Step Up Interest in Arthur Dias

TEAMtalk claims Spurs have been among the most active suitors, sending scouts to Arena da Baixada earlier this year and opening preliminary talks. An initial approach was turned down, and Athletico have since set a €30million asking price. Tottenham are expected to return in the coming months.

Newcastle are watching the left-footed 19-year-old, alongside Nottingham Forest and Brentford. Further afield, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Atalanta, Como, Atlético Madrid and Benfica are all reportedly following his progress, so Spurs will face stiff competition.

Arthur Dias’s Rise at Athletico Paranaense

Dias began as a striker before being converted into a defender, and he joined the senior squad at the start of 2026. He has since played 31 games this season, totalling more than 2,600 minutes, taking his senior tally beyond 50 appearances. Composure on the ball, physical strength and an eye for the game have set him apart, and Carlo Ancelotti has already handed him a senior Brazil cap.

Contracted until December 2028, Dias gives Athletico little reason to rush. The club would prefer to keep him until the end of the season, though they would consider an offer matching their valuation, with bids anticipated in January.

Our Take: A Smart Long-Term Play for Spurs

In my view, a left-sided centre-back with room to grow fits Tottenham’s plans, particularly after their heavy investment in defence this summer. Paying €30million for a teenager is a gamble, yet his Brazil recognition and versatility justify the price. Newcastle may feel more urgency, since Dias could eventually succeed ageing defenders such as Fabian Schar and Dan Burn, which could make January a genuine fight.
