Arsenal Contact Sturm Graz Over £20m January Move for Luca Weinhandl

Arsenal have reportedly opened early discussions over Sturm Graz teenager Luca Weinhandl, with a January transfer now firmly on the agenda, according to TEAMtalk.

The 17-year-old is regarded as one of Austria’s brightest prospects, and a fee of around £20m is said to be enough to get a deal done.

Who Is Luca Weinhandl?

Standing 6ft 3in tall, Weinhandl started out at SV Wildon before joining the Graz academy in 2015. He progressed rapidly, making his first-team debut aged just 15 and becoming the first player born in 2009 to feature in Austria’s second tier.

Since Sturm’s promotion, he has become a regular in the senior squad, making 25 appearances and scoring his maiden goal in May. Teammate Otar Kiteishvili has described him as “unbelievable”. That rapid rise has made him one of the most talked-about young players in Austria.

Rivals Line Up for Weinhandl

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal’s hierarchy reportedly see the youngster as a long-term addition, although talks remain at an initial stage. The Gunners are expected to face stiff competition from Brighton, Aston Villa, Stuttgart and several Serie A clubs.

Arsenal’s Midfield Plans

On the face of it, Arsenal hardly need more midfielders. Bruno Guimaraes has joined Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Ødegaard, Martin Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze in an enviably deep group.

Yet it is also the oldest area of their outfield squad, and the converted Lewis Skelly is the only midfielder in the first-team group aged under 25.

In our opinion, this looks like shrewd planning rather than panic buying. A teenager on a relatively modest fee could learn gradually alongside Rice and Zubimendi, while giving Arteta a ready-made option when senior midfielders eventually move on. Persuading Weinhandl himself that Arsenal offers a better pathway than Brighton or Villa may prove the harder task, though, and the race could heat up quickly once the January window opens.
