Chelsea Join Race for Philadelphia Union Teenager Malik Jakupovic

Blues Enter Crowded Field for USA Prospect

Chelsea have reportedly entered the chase for Philadelphia Union striker Malik Jakupovic, according to TEAMtalk. The United States Under-17 international is attracting growing attention across Europe after a rapid rise through the Union ranks.

Impressive Youth Record

Jakupovic joined Philadelphia’s academy only just over a year ago, yet he has already scored 11 times in 36 youth appearances. He topped the scoring charts in the Concacaf qualifiers for the Under-17 World Cup, hitting eight goals in three matches, including five in a 10-0 rout of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

He made his senior debut in February during a 7-0 Concacaf Champions Cup win over Defence Force. A first senior goal followed in September, taking his tally to six goal contributions this season.

Philadelphia Hold the Aces

Chelsea will not have it easy. Philadelphia recently extended the forward’s contract and are said to want a double-figure fee before sanctioning a sale. Borussia Dortmund have already had a £2.5m bid turned down, while Salzburg, Stuttgart, Monaco and Eintracht Frankfurt are also reported admirers.

Fits the Clearlake Blueprint

Chelsea have shown they are willing to pay for potential, having agreed an £8m deal, including add-ons, for FC Dallas teenager Benji Flowers. Bringing in Harrison Bettoni and Alfie Osborne this summer underlines the same strategy.

Our Take

At 6ft 3in with a proven eye for goal, Jakupovic looks a smart target. Chelsea’s financial muscle gives them an edge, though the sheer number of rival suitors, and Philadelphia’s firm stance, could push the price up considerably.
