Liverpool Step Up Pursuit of Arsenal Target Gilberto Mora in £30m Midfield Race

Liverpool Make Early Move for Club Tijuana Teenager

Liverpool have reportedly intensified their interest in Club Tijuana midfielder Gilberto Mora, according to TEAMtalk. The Reds have already made contact over a possible deal, with the Mexican now eligible to move to Europe after turning 18.

Arsenal are also keen, but the Merseyside club appear to have stolen a march in the chase for one of the continent’s most highly rated young playmakers.

Why Liverpool Want a Creative Midfielder

Florian Wirtz has struggled to reproduce his Bundesliga form since arriving at Anfield, contributing 15 goals and assists across all competitions last season. Dominik Szoboszlai, meanwhile, has largely been deployed deeper and is currently sidelined.

Mora’s versatility is a major selling point. The right-footed 18-year-old is comfortable as an attacking midfielder or in a box-to-box role, and he can also cover on the left flank.

Crowded Field for Mora’s Signature

Club Tijuana reportedly want around £30m, which would set a new Liga MX record transfer fee. Competition is fierce, with Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, Real Madrid and Barcelona all credited with interest.

Arsenal’s Position

Arsenal already have Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino in the creative midfield area, while Max Dowman is emerging from the academy. That depth suggests the Gunners may not need to prioritise a signing unless a key player departs.

Our Take

Mora looks a shrewd long-term investment for either club. Liverpool arguably have the greater need, given Wirtz’s slow start and Szoboszlai’s injury, so their early approach makes sense. With so many heavyweights circling, the Reds will need to move decisively in January.
