Xabi Alonso’s side went into the closing stages of the summer window hoping to land a midfielder capable of walking straight into the first team. Henderson offers experience and leadership rather than long-term game-changing quality, while Barco remains a work in progress who still needs time to adjust to English football’s demands.

A late push for Lamine Camara also collapsed before deadline day, and Chelsea’s £51m bid for Koné was reportedly knocked back by Roma. His numbers back that up: over 90% pass completion in Serie A this term, strong long-ball accuracy, and solid defensive returns in duels and tackles per 90 minutes. At around £42m, he looks like sensible value for a player who ticks the boxes Chelsea have been missing.
