Reece James Injury: Chelsea Captain Out for Three Months After Knee Surgery
Chelsea have been dealt a significant setback after confirming that club captain Reece James has undergone knee surgery, with reports suggesting a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

What Chelsea Have Confirmed
The Blues revealed on Friday that the 26-year-old had “successful minor knee surgery” following an injury sustained in training. Medical assessments showed an operation was necessary, and James has now begun rehabilitation at Cobham.
The defender missed the 5-1 win over Bournemouth, having already sat out the 3-0 loss at Brentford. He has not played since the 2-2 draw with Hull on 12 September.
How Long Will James Be Out?
Chelsea have not disclosed a timescale, but journalist Kieran Gill claims James could miss up to three months. Gill also reports that the England international will not be rushed back.
The captain has already lost 30 days to injury this season, extending a frustrating pattern that has repeatedly disrupted his progress in recent years.
Henderson Set to Fill the Void
Chelsea travel to Everton on Saturday, and Jordan Henderson is expected to continue in James’ role after impressing against Bournemouth, where he was named man of the match.
Our Take
This is a cruel blow for a player Chelsea can ill afford to lose. Xabi Alonso’s side look to be finding momentum, and James’ leadership and quality in possession will be missed. The bigger concern is durability: his repeated absences raise fair questions about whether the club can rely on him for a sustained title push. Henderson offers experience, but Chelsea may need to consider reinforcements in January.
