West Ham target Toulouse’s Charlie Cresswell in late transfer push

West Ham United are eyeing a move for Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell as Graham Potter looks to bolster his backline before the transfer deadline, according to BBC Sport.

The Hammers’ squad has been built around a back four under former bosses David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui, but Potter has switched to a back three system since taking charge. With Nayef Aguerd, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman already competing for places, the English manager is still keen to add more depth.

Defensive reinforcements needed

West Ham have already recruited Soungoutou Magassa from AS Monaco, a versatile option who can play both centre-back and defensive midfield. But Potter wants another specialist defender to tighten up a shaky defence that has already leaked 11 goals in three games this season.

Cresswell has caught West Ham’s attention with his commanding displays in Ligue 1. Standing at 6ft 3in, the 23-year-old is strong in the air and reliable in his defensive duties. He also played a key role in England’s U21 European Championship triumph this summer, enhancing his growing reputation.

Transfer challenge

However, prising him away from Toulouse may not be simple. The French side have already lost Jaydee Canvot to Crystal Palace this window and are reluctant to sanction another defensive departure.

Cresswell, a product of Leeds United’s academy, only joined Toulouse last summer and quickly established himself as a first-team regular. His progress has not gone unnoticed, and West Ham see him as a potential long-term solution at the heart of their defence.

Busy end to the window

The Hammers’ poor start has forced them into late action in the market. Alongside Magassa, they have snapped up Mateus Fernandes from Southampton to strengthen midfield options.

Cresswell could prove to be a clever addition if West Ham manage to strike a deal, but with time running out, Potter and the board must move swiftly to land their target.
