Barcelona starlet Marc Bernal on Chelsea and Everton radar?

Chelsea and Everton reportedly made ambitious moves in the summer transfer window to sign Barcelona’s teenage prodigy Marc Bernal, but their pursuit ended in disappointment.

Premier League Clubs Circle Barcelona’s Rising Talent

According to Mundo Deportivo, both Chelsea and Everton were among seven clubs that enquired about the 18-year-old midfielder, who has already been hailed as one of La Liga’s brightest young prospects. Despite the interest, Barcelona were unwilling to part ways with their academy gem.

Bernal, born in Berga, has developed through the famed La Masia system after short spells with CE Berga and Gimnastic Manresa. Primarily a defensive midfielder, his versatility allows him to slot in as a central midfielder or even at centre-back.

The youngster broke into Barcelona’s first-team setup at the start of the 2024/25 season, making three appearances before a knee injury cut short his campaign. Under Hansi Flick, he is still expected to play a key role once he returns to full fitness.

Why Chelsea and Everton Wanted Bernal

Chelsea’s interest was hardly surprising. Enzo Maresca may have Andrey Santos, Enzo Fernández, and Moisés Caicedo at his disposal, but depth in midfield remains a priority for the Blues. Bernal’s technical ability and tactical maturity at such a young age made him an attractive option.

Everton also had their reasons. With Abdoulaye Doucouré departing as a free agent and veteran Idrissa Gueye nearing the end of his career, the Toffees were actively seeking fresh legs in midfield. David Moyes reportedly identified Bernal as an ideal long-term fit alongside James Garner.

A Future Star in High Demand

Alongside Chelsea and Everton, clubs like AS Roma, Brighton, Girona, Real Betis, and Valencia also registered interest in the teenager. For now, Barcelona have shut the door on any potential transfer, keen to oversee Bernal’s recovery and development.

Still, with so many European clubs monitoring his progress, Marc Bernal’s name is one we are likely to hear a lot more of in the transfer market over the coming years.
