Chelsea Ready to Offer Frenkie de Jong Big Contract in January Transfer Push

Chelsea are reportedly prepared to table a lucrative deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong as Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen his midfield in January, according to Football Insider.

Why Chelsea Want De Jong

The Blues bounced back with a 5-1 win over Bournemouth to climb to sixth in the Premier League, but Alonso’s priority remains a top-five finish and a return to the Champions League. Enzo Fernandez’s summer departure to Manchester City left a gap in the engine room, and Chelsea struggled for control during Moises Caicedo’s spell on the sidelines.

De Jong’s passing, close control and ability to drive play forward from deep would offer exactly the kind of composure Chelsea lacked. He could also form a balanced double pivot alongside Caicedo.

Barcelona Could Cash In

Spanish reports suggest Barcelona may sanction a sale for around £51 million. With Rodri arriving, Pedri favoured by Hansi Flick and Marc Bernal and Gavi available, the Dutchman is no longer considered indispensable at Camp Nou. Funds raised could help finance a new striker.

For the 29-year-old, a switch to Stamford Bridge would bring Premier League football and potentially a bigger salary on what may be his last major long-term contract in Europe.

Our Opinion

On paper, this looks a sensible fit for everyone involved. Chelsea get a technically gifted midfielder who suits Alonso’s style, while Barcelona free up wages and money for attacking reinforcements. The real question is whether De Jong’s injury record and wage demands justify the outlay. If those concerns are manageable, January could bring genuine movement.
