Should Man Utd Sign Karim Benzema?

Manchester United have been told to bolster their attack with a veteran number nine, and Rio Ferdinand has named Karim Benzema as the man to do it.

Why Ferdinand Wants Benzema at Old Trafford

The former United defender used his YouTube channel to argue that the Red Devils lack a reliable focal point up front. Speaking in comments reported by Metro, Ferdinand said both Benzema and Danny Welbeck would have brought “huge value” to the forward line.

Welbeck is no longer an option after his summer move to Chelsea from Brighton, leaving Benzema as the more realistic target.

Striker Problems Continue for Man Utd

Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee are United’s specialist centre-forwards, yet neither has convinced consistently. Zirkzee has struggled to settle in England since arriving from Bologna, while Sesko has shown flashes of quality but has been hampered by fitness issues since leaving RB Leipzig.

Consequently, Michael Carrick has deployed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo through the middle, despite both being more effective out wide. Ferdinand accepts that Sesko’s minutes would need careful management, which only strengthens the case for another option.

Benzema Available on a Free Transfer

The Frenchman became a free agent after leaving Al-Hilal this summer, so United could move immediately without paying a fee. His pedigree after years of success at Real Madrid is beyond question.

However, he is 38, and doubts remain over whether he could handle the physical demands of the Premier League at this stage of his career.

United’s Troubled Start to the Season

The need for reinforcements feels urgent. After finishing third last term, United invested heavily in midfield, signing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. Yet they sit bottom of the table with five points from five games and have already been eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Brighton.

Our Take

Benzema’s quality is not in doubt, but this feels more like a short-term sticking plaster than a solution. Carrick may be better served finding a younger, fitter striker, or simply getting Sesko consistently fit. Even so, a free agent with Benzema’s experience could offer a useful boost while United search for answers.
